More fun and frugal Halloween costumes

By Star-Ledger Guest Columnist

JuliaScott.jpgJulia Scott writes the savvy-spending blog BargainBabe.comBig dilemma. What should I dress up as for Halloween without going broke for a costume I will wear for approximately 139 minutes? I’m guessing you may be facing the same problem.

To solve it, I asked readers to shares ideas for homemade costumes that are extremely cheap to put together. Two weeks ago I shared the first batch of ideas. Here are even more. I’m seriously considering the last one.

Anyone could do Kathy’s idea. “My hairdresser gave me this one,” Kathy said. “No cost, clever and my personal favorite — comfortable. Using some safety pins, pin one or two socks, a pair of undies and any other small cloth items you can think of, to various places on your clothing. You are now static cling!”

Liz has four winning ideas. I especially like the second. “In my college/post-college days when money was always tight, I thought of some great costumes using my warped sense of humor. First, similar to Kathy’s static cling, I dressed, head to toe, in black and stuck string, crumpled tissues and other light-weight items on me and went as dryer lint.

“Second. Again, I dressed in black. Then I cut the cereal names from their boxes and pinned them to my body. My only other prop was a cleaver with fake blood on it. I was a ‘cereal’ killer.

“Third. I bought a cheap, yellow sweatsuit from Kmart, laid it on my driveway and then sprayed black spray paint on a section of my car’s spare tire. I then rolled the tire over the front of the sweatshirt top and then on the pants. Voila! Speed bump.

“Fourth. I borrowed a white lab coat from my friend’s mom and made dental tools from aluminum foil. I placed the tools in the breast pocket along with a few packs of Dentine gum. I was the fifth dentist — the one that didn’t recommend Trident. When people asked what I was, I handed out a piece of Dentine as I explained the costume. It was a big hit.”

Karen’s idea is clever and low-budget. “I had a very sarcastic friend in college, many years ago, and she dressed in a green T-shirt and jeans. On the left side near her heart in black marker she wrote the letters NV. When asked what her costume was she replied: I’m green with envy.”

Elizabeth’s idea is classy. “Two years ago, I wore a dead-on Jacqueline Onassis-style ‘do’ and oversize dark sunglasses, borrowed some pearls and, beneath a tailored suit jacket, wore a giant pumpkin face that I’d cut from one of those cheap plastic lawn bags. My Jackie O. Lantern was a hit everywhere it went that year and cost me a grand total of $8 for the drugstore sunglasses and pumpkin bag!”

You can suggest a frugal Halloween costume at BargainBabe.com. I’ll dress up as the cheapest, most bizarre costume you’ve suggested and post pictures of the winning costume, of course.

If none of the above ideas caught your eye, PureCostumes.com has a range of traditional costumes like jailbird, witch and ’50s poodle skirt girl. Each day, the site sells one costume for $10.31. Click on “31 days of Halloween” to find the daily deal.

I saw costumes for as little as $8 on the site and for as much as $90. Most were priced between $10 and $40. Under each age category there is a clearance section with slightly lower prices. You can also search for costumes by price. The site lets you calculate the shipping before you fully check out, which is a nice feature.

If you are getting dressed up for Halloween, chances are you’re going to need some makeup. EyesLipsFace.com is a great source of super cheap makeup. Most everything on the site is $1.

Oriental Trading is more of a party supply store, but they have three makeup kits, including a glitter kit, a clown kit and a glow-in-the-dark white makeup kit for $2 to $3 each. Hard to beat those prices.

If you are not interested in buying makeup online, drop by your local drugstore. Rite Aid, CVS and Walgreens have low-priced makeup, and there are often makeup coupons in the Sunday newspaper inserts. Rite Aid has a few beauty coupons online.

Got makeup but lack imagination? Google “Halloween makeup ideas” and click on the image results. The pictures that come up will give you ideas for how to achieve a particular look, like a puppy dog, zombie or vampire.

Liverpool back for Premier League title fight: Torres

LONDON: Spanish striker Fernando Torres believes English Premier League club Liverpool FC is right back in the title fight after handing out a
two-nil defeat to arch rivals Manchester United on Sunday.

Coach Rafa Benitez decided to play his star striker despite his lack of match fitness, and 25-year-old Torres managed to out-muscle England defender Rio Ferdinand for Liverpool's 65th-minute opener.

David Ngog's injury-time second wrapped up a victory that ended a run of four defeats - Liverpool's worst slump in 22 years.

And it moved them to within six points of leaders Chelsea, and four of United.

"We knew we needed to win to stay in the title race and we're definitely in it now. We have to be really happy with that performance but we have to make sure we keep going now," The Sun quoted Torres, as saying.

Benitez claimed: "We needed to win for our confidence so this will be a big boost for us, because we have won against a good team.

"The fans are delighted and you can see that the players are also in the same mood and this has to be very positive," he added.

The Kop boss said: "Small details against such good opposition can be the difference. They had some early chances but we were on top of them from the beginning. We were waiting for that final pass, and when it came we knew Fernando would score. The team wanted to win, to show what they could do. And with every last one of our fans behind us right to the end, we managed it."

The Mermaid Girl Dies - Shiloh Pepin Pictures

by Regina A
Yes, it is a sad day. The ten year old little girl, named Shiloh Pepin, known as the mermaid girl has died. The little girl was born with a disease known as mermaid syndrome died on Friday after catching a cold that progressively worsened until she had pneumonia. The girl when she was born was not expected to live more than a few days, but somehow she managed to live on til the age of ten. A story of strength and courage to be sure.

The little girl won the hearts of many after appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show and having her own documentary on TLC. Shiloh never had the surgery that could separate her legs from each other. Her legs were fused in such a way that major blood vessels would have been damaged and the operation would have caused her death.

Her mother had the following to say about her daughter Shiloh "She was a tough little thing." I think that right there is an understatement. Rest in peace, Little Mermaid. Check out the following video on Shiloh and some pictures of the amazing little girl below.

Opening day: 'Paranormal' beating 'Saw' as every new movie looks soft

In the battle of the horror movies, "Paranormal Activity" has taken an early lead over "Saw VI" on a weekend that looks to be disappointing for every studio with a new film.

Paramount's indie horror sensation "Paranormal" sold $7.6 million worth of tickets Friday, putting it on track to collect just over $20 million for the weekend. "Saw VI," meanwhile, took in a little less than $7 million Friday and will probably gross $15 million to $20 million for the weekend.

It was an open question going into the weekend which of the two movies would attract bigger crowds. The more meaningful result, however, is that "Saw VI" is on track to significantly underperform every movie in Lionsgate's horror series, from 2005's "Saw II" through 2008's "Saw V," all of which debuted to more than $30 million. That's a sign not only that "Saw VI" was hurt by "Paranormal," but also that audience interest in the franchise may be waning.

Outside of the matchup of scary flicks, it's looking like a very soft weekend for three new pictures. Universal's "Cirque du Freak," which it co-financed with Relativity Media, opened to a weak $2.2 million on Friday and will probably take in $6 million to $7 million this weekend. Imagi Studios' animated feature "Astro Boy," which is being distributed by Summit Entertainment, and Fox Searchlight's "Amelia" both sold under $2 million worth of tickets in the U.S. and Canada on Friday, meaning they will probably gross about $7 million and $5 million, respectively, for the full weekend.

Official estimates of weekend domestic ticket sales will be released by studios Sunday morning.
